Ref. 26589IO
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept is the brand's laboratory, a collection where haute horlogerie, avant-garde design, and technological innovation converge. Introduced in 2002 as the first Royal Oak watch with a fully skeletonised movement, the Concept line represents the most radical and experimental interpretation of the iconic Royal Oak DNA. Here, Audemars Piguet tests the boundaries of what is mechanically and aesthetically possible.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept
The Royal Oak Concept was introduced in 2002 at the SIHH fair in Geneva, marking a radically new chapter for Audemars Piguet. Where the classic Royal Oak and the Offshore represented an evolution of the existing DNA, the Concept was a revolution. The first model, reference 25980AI, presented a fully skeletonised movement behind an architectural case design that resembled a futuristic instrument more than a traditional watch. With a 44 mm case in titanium and alacrite (an exotic alloy), a tourbillon, and a dynamograph (a power gauge that visually displayed the energy of the mainspring), the Concept was a statement that Audemars Piguet was not merely guarding the past but actively shaping the future of horology.
In the years that followed, the Concept line became the platform for Audemars Piguet's most ambitious technical achievements. The Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon (reference 26580IO) combined a flying tourbillon with a GMT function in a skeletonised calibre that was hand-finished to the very highest standard. Each Concept reference introduced new materials or complications: from forged carbon and ceramic to supersonnerie minute repeaters. The limited production runs, sometimes no more than a few dozen pieces, made the Concept a coveted collector's item for the most discerning watch connoisseurs in the world.
The Concept line also deliberately broke with the aesthetic conventions of horology. Where traditional haute horlogerie watches often concealed their complications behind a closed dial, Audemars Piguet chose to make the movement fully visible in the Concept. Skeletonisation, openworked bridges, and architectural constructions allowed the wearer to admire the mechanical heart of the watch in all its complexity. This transparency became a hallmark of the line and influenced the entire watch industry, which increasingly began to embrace open-worked movements.
With the introduction of the Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon (reference 26589IO) in ceramic and titanium, the line reached a new pinnacle. The flying tourbillon, without an upper bridge, seemingly hovering within the movement, demonstrated Audemars Piguet's mastery of one of the most demanding complications in horology. The combination of high-tech materials, a skeletonised calibre with hand-applied Côtes de Genève finishing, and the signature Royal Oak silhouette made this model a synthesis of everything the Concept line stands for: tradition and future, craft and technology, beauty and complexity.
