History

Audemars Piguet

In 1875, two young watchmakers, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet, joined forces in Le Brassus, a remote village in the Swiss Vallée de Joux. Both came from families with long traditions in watchmaking and shared a passion for mechanical complications. Their collaboration began as a small workshop producing complicated movements for established brands, but they soon developed timepieces under their own name. In 1882, Audemars Piguet & Cie was officially founded, with an unwavering dedication to the highest levels of finishing and precision.

From the very beginning, Audemars Piguet distinguished itself through the production of exceptionally complicated movements. In 1889, the brand presented a grande complication pocket watch at the Paris World Exhibition, a masterpiece featuring a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, and chronograph. This marked the start of a long tradition of watchmaking at the very highest level. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the house continued to innovate with increasingly refined complications, including the thinnest repeater movements and tourbillons. The Vallée de Joux, with its harsh winters and isolated setting, provided the perfect environment for the patient, meticulous craft that defines Audemars Piguet.

The introduction of the Royal Oak in 1972 was a turning point, not just for Audemars Piguet, but for the entire Swiss watch industry. Designed by the legendary Gerald Genta in just one night, the Royal Oak was the first luxury sports watch crafted in stainless steel. The octagonal bezel with visible screws, the "tapisserie" patterned dial, and the integrated steel bracelet were revolutionary. At a time when the Swiss watch industry was struggling with the rise of quartz watches, the Royal Oak proved that bold design and mechanical craftsmanship were still relevant. The model became a cultural icon and laid the foundation for the luxury sports watch category.

What truly sets Audemars Piguet apart in the world of haute horlogerie is that the brand remains in the hands of the founding families to this day. As one of the few independent manufactures, AP has never had to make concessions to external shareholders or conglomerates. This independence allows the brand to stay true to its original values: uncompromising quality, artisanal finishing, and the courage to innovate. Every movement is still assembled, finished, and inspected by hand in the workshops of Le Brassus.

In the twenty-first century, Audemars Piguet continues to push boundaries. The introduction of the Code 11.59 in 2019 demonstrated the brand's willingness to surprise once again with an entirely new watch design. Simultaneously, AP continually invests in new materials, from forged carbon and ceramic to proprietary gold alloys, and in groundbreaking caliber innovations. The Musée Atelier, opened in 2020 in Le Brassus, connects the brand's rich heritage with its vision for the future. Audemars Piguet is not just a watch, it is a promise of unparalleled craftsmanship, carried by generations of passion and perfection.
