Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore
The Royal Oak Offshore was born in 1993 from the vision of Emmanuel Gueit, then a young designer at Audemars Piguet. The concept was simple but daring: take the iconic Royal Oak design and make it larger, bolder, and sportier. The first Offshore featured a 42mm case diameter, significantly larger than the standard Royal Oak, with prominent crown guards and a more imposing presence. The watch world was divided: purists felt it strayed too far from Genta's original, while a new generation of buyers was enthusiastic about its powerful aesthetic.
In the years that followed, the Offshore grew into a standalone icon within the Audemars Piguet portfolio. The model became associated with an active, adventurous lifestyle and attracted a clientele ranging from professional athletes to Hollywood stars. Numerous limited editions and collaborations, including with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the so-called "The Legacy", reinforced the exclusive and sporty image of the collection. The Offshore proved that a watch could combine mechanical craftsmanship with fearless design.
Technically, the Offshore evolved with the times. Early models used adapted versions of proven calibers, but Audemars Piguet continuously invested in developing proprietary movements for the line. The introduction of new materials, ceramic, forged carbon, titanium, and patented gold alloys, turned the Offshore into a laboratory for material innovation. The watch combined extreme durability with the refined finishing that defines Audemars Piguet.
In 2022, Audemars Piguet launched a redesigned Royal Oak Offshore collection with the reference 26238ST as a standout newcomer. The case was brought back to 42mm (after earlier variants reaching 44mm) with a refined design that brought the line closer to the original Royal Oak while preserving the powerful Offshore character. With the new flyback chronograph caliber 4401, entirely developed in-house, Audemars Piguet set a new standard for sporty luxury chronographs. The Offshore has become a collection in its own right, with its own identity, its own fans, and an undisputed place in the history of horology.
