History

Patek Philippe

The story of Patek Philippe begins in 1839, when Polish immigrant Antoni Patek, together with François Czapek, establishes a watch manufactory in Geneva under the name Patek, Czapek & Cie. In 1845, Patek meets the brilliant French watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe, inventor of the keyless winding system that eliminated the need for a separate key, a revolutionary innovation for its time. Their collaboration leads to the founding of Patek Philippe & Co in 1851, a partnership that would forever change the world of horology. From the very beginning, the house pursued perfection in every component, from the smallest screw to the most complex complication.

Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Patek Philippe establishes itself as the brand of kings, emperors, and intellectuals. Queen Victoria of England, Pope Pius IX, and numerous European royal families wear timepieces from the Genevan house. In 1868, Patek Philippe produces the first Swiss wristwatch for the Hungarian Countess Koscowicz. In 1925, the brand introduces the first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar, followed by the first wristwatch with a split-seconds chronograph in 1927. This pioneering role in complications would remain a constant thread throughout the house's entire history.

In 1932, the Stern family, themselves established dial manufacturers, assumes ownership of Patek Philippe. Under their stewardship, the brand maintains its uncompromising dedication to quality while adapting to the demands of modern times. The Stern family now governs the company in its fourth generation, with Thierry Stern serving as current president. This uninterrupted family ownership is unique in the Swiss watch industry and ensures that commercial pressures never come at the expense of artisanal excellence. The continuity of vision enables Patek Philippe to undertake projects that span years or even decades, such as the development of their most complicated timepieces.

In 2009, Patek Philippe introduces its own Patek Philippe Seal, replacing the previously used Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève). This hallmark sets stricter requirements than any external certification: not only must the movement meet the highest finishing standards, but the entire watch, including case, dial, and bracelet, is evaluated against criteria that exceed any industry standard. Additionally, the Patek Philippe Seal guarantees an accuracy of -3 to +2 seconds per day, stricter than the COSC chronometer norm. It is the ultimate promise of quality to the wearer.

The iconic advertising slogan "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation" perfectly captures the brand's philosophy. A Patek Philippe is not a possession but an heirloom, an object that spans generations and only gains in value and significance over time. With its own museum in Geneva housing more than five centuries of horological history, and an unrivalled restoration workshop capable of servicing and restoring every Patek Philippe watch ever produced, the house proves that craftsmanship has no endpoint but is an eternal promise.
