History

Rolex

Rolex was founded in 1905 in London by German entrepreneur Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis under the name "Wilsdorf & Davis". Wilsdorf had a vision far ahead of his time: he wanted to transform wristwatches, then considered inaccurate jewelry, into reliable precision instruments. In 1908, he registered the brand name "Rolex", a name easy to pronounce and remember in any language. The company relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, the heart of haute horlogerie, in 1919.

The first major breakthrough came in 1926 with the introduction of the Oyster, the world's first waterproof wristwatch. Wilsdorf proved its water resistance in spectacular fashion by having British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wear an Oyster during her attempt to swim the English Channel in 1927. In 1931, the second revolution followed: the Perpetual rotor mechanism, the first self-winding mechanism with a freely rotating rotor. This mechanism remains the foundation of virtually every automatic watch to this day.

In the decades following World War II, Rolex developed a series of iconic models, each becoming a legend in its own right. The Explorer reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953 alongside Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. That same year, the Submariner emerged as the first diving watch waterproof to 100 meters. The GMT-Master was developed in 1955 in collaboration with Pan American World Airways for pilots crossing multiple time zones. And in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona appeared, designed for racing drivers and later immortalized by Paul Newman.

Rolex has always remained a pioneer in materials science and watchmaking technology. The brand developed proprietary alloys such as Oystersteel (an exceptionally corrosion-resistant 904L steel), Everose (a patented rose gold alloy that does not fade), and Cerachrom (scratch-resistant ceramic bezels). The Parachrom hairspring, introduced in 2000, is ten times more shock-resistant than traditional hairsprings and virtually immune to magnetic fields.

Today, Rolex produces an estimated one million-plus watches per year across four factories in Switzerland. Every watch undergoes rigorous quality controls and carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, guaranteeing accuracy within -2/+2 seconds per day, twice as stringent as the COSC standard. Rolex remains independent, owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, and reinvests its profits in philanthropy, science, and culture.
