Rolex GMT-Master II

The GMT-Master II has an additional hand (the GMT hand) that rotates around the dial in 24 hours, in combination with a 24-hour Cerachrom bezel. The regular hour and minute hands indicate local time. The GMT hand shows a second time zone on the 24-hour bezel. By rotating the bezel, you can read a third time zone. When changing time zones, you can independently adjust the hour hand in one-hour increments without affecting the GMT hand or the minute and second hands.

The price of a pre-owned GMT-Master II varies depending on the reference, bezel type (Pepsi, Batman, Root Beer), material, and condition. Like the Submariner and Daytona, the GMT-Master II is often traded above official retail price on the pre-owned market due to limited dealer availability. The key difference is the movement. In the original GMT-Master (produced from 1955 to 1999), the hour hand and GMT hand were linked, adjusting the hour hand would also move the GMT hand. In the GMT-Master II (from 1983), the hour hand is independently adjustable, allowing you to change local time in one-hour increments without disturbing the GMT hand. This makes the GMT-Master II significantly more practical for frequent travelers. Rolex has exclusively produced the GMT-Master II since 1999.

The GMT-Master II and the Submariner are both sports watches, but with a different focus. The Submariner is designed as a dive watch with 300-meter water resistance, while the GMT-Master II is a travel watch with 100-meter water resistance and the ability to read multiple time zones. If you travel frequently, the GMT-Master II is the logical choice. If you are looking for a watch for water sports or diving, the Submariner is better suited. In terms of wearing comfort and appearance, they are comparable. Many collectors own both models.

The red-blue "Pepsi" bezel is historically the most iconic and popular color combination, with roots going back to the very first GMT-Master from 1955. The black-blue "Batman" is a strong second, loved for its more understated appearance that is easier to combine with various outfits. The "Root Beer" appeals especially to collectors seeking something unique and appreciating the warmth of Everose gold. All three variants are highly sought after and retain their value excellently.
