Rolex GMT-Master II
The story of the GMT-Master begins in 1955, when Rolex developed the watch in collaboration with Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). Pilots who regularly crossed multiple time zones needed a watch that could simultaneously display local time and the time at their home base. The solution was an additional hand that rotated around the dial in 24 hours, combined with a rotatable 24-hour bezel. The original GMT-Master ref. 6542 had a Bakelite bezel in red and blue, the combination that would later earn the nickname "Pepsi".
In 1983, Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II (ref. 16760), a significant evolution with an independently adjustable hour hand. This meant the wearer could adjust the local time in one-hour increments without disturbing the minute and second hands, particularly practical when changing time zones. The GMT-Master II made it possible to simultaneously read three time zones: local time via the regular hands, a second time zone via the 24-hour hand and bezel, and a third by rotating the bezel.
The GMT-Master II became world-famous for its colorful bezel variants, each with its own nickname. The red-blue "Pepsi" is the most iconic, followed by the black-blue "Batman" (introduced in 2013) and the black-brown "Root Beer". In 2018, Rolex caused a sensation by offering the "Pepsi" bezel for the first time in the steel Oyster collection with Jubilee bracelet (ref. 126710BLRO), after years of being exclusively available in precious metals.
The current GMT-Master II generation is powered by caliber 3285 with a 70-hour power reserve and the Chronergy escapement. The Cerachrom bezels are manufactured in two colors using a patented process that Rolex is one of the few brands to master. The colors are embedded in the ceramic itself and cannot discolor or scratch. The GMT-Master II remains one of the most functional and simultaneously most attractive watches in the Rolex lineup.
