History

Rolex Sky-Dweller

The Rolex Sky-Dweller was introduced in 2012 as an entirely new model, something Rolex rarely does. The watch was designed for frequent travelers who needed a complication that went beyond the GMT-Master II. The Sky-Dweller combines two complications that rarely appear together in haute horlogerie: a dual time zone and an annual calendar. The annual calendar automatically distinguishes between months with 30 and 31 days and only needs manual adjustment once a year, on March 1st.

The technical innovation behind the Sky-Dweller is caliber 9001, later replaced by caliber 9002. This movement contains 380 components and uses an ingenious system that Rolex calls the Ring Command bezel. The fluted bezel is not merely decorative: by rotating the bezel to three positions, the wearer can select which function to set, local time, reference time, or the date. The crown then serves to adjust the selected function. This makes operating a complex watch surprisingly intuitive.

At introduction, the Sky-Dweller was exclusively available in precious metals, in line with Rolex's tradition of first offering new complications in the most prestigious executions. In 2017, a breakthrough followed: the Sky-Dweller was offered for the first time in Oystersteel and Rolesor combinations (ref. 326934), making the model more accessible to a broader audience. In 2023, Rolex introduced ref. 336935, a steel version with Jubilee bracelet that made the Sky-Dweller even more popular.

The Sky-Dweller, with its 42 mm case, is one of the larger models in the Rolex lineup. The off-center date window, month display via twelve small apertures around the dial, and the eccentric 24-hour disc for the second time zone give the watch a unique character that immediately distinguishes it from all other Rolex models. For the traveler who wants it all in a single watch, the Sky-Dweller is the ultimate choice.
