Rolex Air-King
The name "Air-King" was introduced by Rolex in 1945 as a tribute to the pilots of the Royal Air Force (RAF) who had fought during World War II. Rolex had a special bond with aviation: as early as the 1930s, pilots wore Rolex Oyster watches for their reliability and robustness. The Air-King was part of a series of "Air" models (including the Air-Lion, Air-Tiger, and Air-Giant), but only the Air-King survived the test of time.
For decades, the Air-King was the entry-level model of the Rolex collection, a modest, no-nonsense watch that offered the essential Rolex qualities without the premium associated with sports models. The model was beloved by pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an honest Rolex watch. Yet the Air-King was never the most conspicuous model and lived a relatively understated existence in the Rolex lineup.
That changed dramatically in 2016, when Rolex completely redesigned the Air-King with reference 116900. The new model was a tribute to the Bloodhound SSC project, an attempt to break the land speed record. The dial was radically different: a combination of green and yellow accents, a prominent "AIR-KING" text, and minute markers reminiscent of an aviation instrument panel. The "Rolex" logo was rendered in the characteristic crown colors. In 2022, an update followed with ref. 126900: a crown guard, new lugs, and caliber 3230.
The current Air-King is a watch that polarizes, some find the dial too busy, others appreciate precisely the unique character that distinguishes the Air-King from every other Rolex model. It is a watch with a story, a tribute to aviation, and proof that Rolex dares to deviate from convention. For collectors and aviation enthusiasts, the Air-King is a fascinating and underrated model.
