Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was introduced in 1963 and is named after Daytona Beach in Florida, the legendary home of American motorsport. The watch was specifically designed for professional racing drivers, featuring a tachymeter scale on the bezel for calculating average speeds. The early models, equipped with hand-wound Valjoux calibers, are today extremely rare and exceptionally valuable.
The Daytona gained worldwide fame through its association with actor and racing driver Paul Newman. The story goes that his wife Joanne Woodward gifted him a Daytona ref. 6239 with the engraving "Drive Carefully Me" on the caseback. The specific dial variant Newman wore, featuring an art-deco-style design with contrasting colored sub-dials, became known as the "Paul Newman dial" and is today one of the most expensive and sought-after watches in the world. In 2017, Newman's own Daytona was auctioned for 17.8 million dollars.
In 1988, Rolex marked a turning point by adopting and modifying the Zenith El Primero caliber as caliber 4030. This was the first Daytona with an automatic movement. In 2000, an even greater step followed: Rolex introduced the entirely in-house developed caliber 4130, an integrated chronograph movement still in use today. This movement made the Daytona thinner, more reliable, and more accurate.
The modern Daytona, with Cerachrom bezel (since 2016 for the steel version, ref. 116500LN), combines the heritage of racing with contemporary watchmaking technology. The scratch-resistant ceramic bezel with engraved tachymeter scale replaces the earlier steel bezel and gives the watch a more contemporary appearance. The Daytona remains one of the hardest-to-obtain Rolex models at authorized dealers, which only increases its allure.
