Rolex Sea-Dweller
Ref. 126600
The Rolex Sea-Dweller is the professional deep-sea diving watch, built to perform where the Submariner reaches its limits. With water resistance to 1,220 meters and the unique helium escape valve, the Sea-Dweller is the instrument of choice for saturation divers and deep-sea explorers.

Rolex Sea-Dweller
The Rolex Sea-Dweller was introduced in 1967 as a specialized diving watch for professional saturation divers. During saturation diving, divers spend days in a pressure chamber breathing a helium-oxygen mixture. The problem: the tiny helium molecules penetrated through the watch's seals, and during decompression, the accumulated pressure could cause the crystal to pop off. Rolex solved this with the patented helium escape valve, a one-way valve that allows helium to escape during decompression without compromising water resistance.
The first Sea-Dweller, ref. 1665, was water-resistant to 610 meters and was tested by COMEX, the French deep-sea diving company that was Rolex's primary partner for years in developing professional diving instruments. In 1978, water resistance was increased to 1,220 meters with ref. 16660, nicknamed the "Triple Six". The Sea-Dweller distinguished itself from the Submariner by the absence of a Cyclops magnifying lens on the date window, a deliberate choice because the lens could distort light refraction underwater.
In 2017, to celebrate the 50th anniversary, Rolex introduced the Sea-Dweller ref. 126600 with an enlarged 43 mm case and, for the first time in the model's history, a Cyclops lens on the date window. This was a controversial decision among purists but made the watch more accessible to a broader audience. Alongside the Sea-Dweller, Rolex offers the Deepsea (ref. 126660), with a spectacular water resistance to 3,900 meters thanks to the Ringlock System.
The Sea-Dweller remains the watch for those who want to explore the limits of what is possible. Whether it is professional saturation diving or a fascination with extreme engineering, the Sea-Dweller represents the pinnacle of what a mechanical watch can achieve under the most demanding conditions.
