Rolex Explorer
The Rolex Explorer traces its origins to the Himalayan expeditions of the 1930s and 1950s, during which Rolex provided watches to climbers to test performance under extreme conditions. The decisive moment came on May 29, 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest. There has been long debate about which exact Rolex model reached the summit, but it is certain that Rolex watches played a crucial role in the expedition. Later that year, Rolex introduced the Explorer, directly inspired by this achievement.
The Explorer was designed with a clear purpose: maximum legibility and reliability under all conditions. The black dial with the characteristic 3-6-9 Arabic numerals and triangular hour marker at 12 o'clock became the visual signature of the model. The Explorer was one of the first Rolex watches with a Chromalight luminescent coating for legibility in the dark, essential for mountaineers departing before sunrise.
Over the years, the Explorer has remained remarkably faithful to its original design. The case diameter was 36 mm for many years, was enlarged to 39 mm in 2010 (ref. 214270), and returned to 36 mm in 2021 with the current reference 124270. In 2023, Rolex introduced a surprising addition: the Explorer 40 mm (ref. 224270), offering two sizes side by side for the first time. Both versions use caliber 3230 with a 70-hour power reserve.
The Explorer represents the essence of the Rolex brand: a watch that excels at what it was made for without embellishment or unnecessary complications. It is the purest Rolex sports watch, no date window, no rotating bezel, just the time, perfectly legible under all conditions. For many, the Explorer is the ultimate "one-watch" timepiece.
