Rolex Datejust
The Datejust was introduced in 1945 to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary. It was a revolutionary watch: the first self-winding, waterproof chronometer wristwatch with an automatically changing date display in a window on the dial, at the 3 o'clock position. The iconic Cyclops magnifying lens over the date window, which magnifies the date 2.5 times for better readability, was added in 1953 and has since become a Rolex trademark.
The Datejust was from the beginning a watch of stature. It was worn by presidents, business magnates, and celebrities. The Jubilee bracelet, designed specifically for the Datejust in 1945, became an icon in its own right with its five links and elegant appearance. In the decades that followed, Rolex expanded the range with countless combinations of materials, dial colors, bezels, and bracelet options, making the Datejust one of the most customizable luxury watches.
Over the years, the Datejust has evolved in case diameter: from the original 36 mm to a 41 mm version (Datejust 41, introduced in 2009 as the Datejust II and refined in 2016) and back to a modernized 36 mm. Despite changes in dimensions and technology, the core design remains recognizable: the Cyclops lens, the three dial options (sticks, Roman numerals, or diamonds), and the choice between Oyster and Jubilee bracelet.
The current Datejust generation uses calibers 3235 (41 mm) and 3235 (36 mm), with the Chronergy escapement for a 70-hour power reserve. The Datejust is available in Oystersteel, two-tone combinations with yellow, white, or Everose gold, and full precious metal executions. It is the watch that defined Rolex as a brand and continues to prove why it is the gold standard.
