Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The story of the Royal Oak begins in 1972, when Audemars Piguet urgently needed a new product to survive in a market dominated by the rise of quartz watches. Italian-Swiss designer Gerald Genta was asked to create a revolutionary watch and reportedly delivered his design in a single night. The result was a luxury sports watch in stainless steel, a concept considered unthinkable at the time. The name "Royal Oak" was a tribute to the HMS Royal Oak, British warships named after the oak tree in which King Charles II hid following the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
At its launch at the Baselworld fair in 1972, reactions were mixed. The watch was more expensive than many gold timepieces yet made from steel, a material previously considered unworthy of luxury watches. But it was precisely this contradiction that made the Royal Oak groundbreaking. The octagonal bezel with eight visible hexagonal screws, inspired by diving helmets, gave the watch an industrial-elegant aesthetic that was far ahead of its time. The "Grande Tapisserie" dial, the slim case (just 7 mm with the caliber 2121), and the seamlessly integrated bracelet turned the entire piece into a sculptural masterpiece.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the Royal Oak evolved into a true cult classic of horology. The collection was expanded with complications: a perpetual calendar (1984), a tourbillon (1986), and numerous chronograph editions. The "Jumbo" Extra-Thin (reference 15202) stayed close to Genta's original design and became the most sought-after version for purists. Each new generation preserved the essence of the original design while refining the movement and finishing.
In 2022, Audemars Piguet celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Royal Oak with the introduction of reference 16202, the direct successor to the Jumbo, now powered by the ultra-thin automatic caliber 7121. This new generation confirmed what connoisseurs had always known: the Royal Oak is not merely a watch, but one of the most important designs in the history of horology. With over fifty years of production, the Royal Oak is an heirloom, an investment, and a statement of refined taste.
